Abstract As humanity sets its sights on establishing a sustainable and prosperous colony Mars, the main challenges to be overcome are ensuring reliable nutritious food supply for settlers, feedstock 3D printing, fuel pharmaceuticals. While various solutions production of essential products Mars have been proposed, there is growing interest in use microorganisms as units. This scientific review article proposes novel concept using single cell oil (SCO) versatile applications bioregenerative life support system (BLSS) space missions. The authors suggest outputs from autotrophic systems, such cyanobacteria biomass oxygen, cultivate SCO-producing class Labyrinthulomycetes. produced SCO can used food, fuel, printing materials, approach potentially reduce importance carbohydrates foods, offering benefits, including reduction weight, simpler, lightweight, more compact bioreactors, launch cost reduction, improved mental cognitive performance, reduced fatigue crew. also printable filaments resins supplementary source colonies. hypothetical, theoretical foundation solid, this could become an important element required establishment successful colony.
